Mary C is a photographer from Italy who is working on a number of projects including  ‘If I Were’ –  a Limited ed. of 25 printed books that are combined with audio that represents the intimate and profound experience of rape. It is a photographic project on the responsive woman, the unresolved female figure between an obsolescent model and the present that at times doesn’t match closely enough, at others’ life bites, to the point of taking away her individual voice.  Another project is ‘If I were … man, free, sound of the sea’ which is a series of 6 photographs, multiple shots of the same Woman and her alter ego, representing the abuse and its opposite.  The project is linked to the long-form article The endless violence on women, the other side of the pandemic::

Self-taught or art school?

I started doing wedding photoshoots on my own, then I specialized at Hertfordshire University.

If you could own one work of art what would it be?

I like Kandinsky, I find the worlds he portrays to be fascinating and colorful.

How would you describe your style?

My style is constantly changing. I try to apply abstraction to realism, realism to the fantasy of a possible world.

Can you tell us about your artistic process?

The process starts from a dream, a clear vision. After that, I try to turn it into something that is feasible.

Is narrative important within your work?

The narrative or the facts that happen in reality are the starting point for the creative process.

Who are your favourite artists and why?

There are many artists that I follow and admire. I would like to be able to experiment and open myself to new experiences.

What or who inspires your art?

The life of the surrealists has always stimulated me to think differently.

Where’s your studio and what’s it like?

My studio is anywhere in the world where I am when I return it’s in Rome.

Do you have any studio rituals?

I have my own particular habits, like the essence of Patchouli and lavender or the morning and evening herbal tea. I consider myself an alchemist. I feel vibrant energy close to nature, sometimes I am looking for a primitive condition with an eye towards the future.

What are you working on currently?

I have two projects in the pipeline: Robolives, which I have to repeat as I had a more lively inspiration, and OscarandMommy, in which I will follow my dog Oscar in a dog-friendly world. On Instagram you will find me as @marycphotographer and @oscarandmommy
