A Dance of Unity Amidst Cultural Diversity in Nigeria

Shalom Nwoha is a dancer and choreographer from Lagos,Nigeria.  Shalom has always loved dancing from an early age and when she got older decided to pursue a career in dance WAZOBIA is one of Shalom’s productions.

In the beating heart of Nigeria’s artistic landscape, Shalom’s visionary dance production, WAZOBIA, emerges as a captivating exploration of the nation’s rich cultural varieties and the pressing need for unity amidst diversity. With a masterful blend of choreography, music, poetry and storytelling, WAZOBIA transcends traditional boundaries to show the profound impact of cultural differences on Nigeria’s societal fabric, while arguing for a collective journey towards national solidarity and harmony.

Shalom Nwoha’s WAZOBIA takes its name from the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria ‘Yoruba’, ‘Hausa’, and ‘Igbo’ symbolising the different cultures that define the nation’s identity. Through an immersive fusion of dance styles, costumes, and music, the production celebrates the vibrant traditions and customs of these diverse ethnicities, offering audiences a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Nigerian heritage.

WAZOBIA sheds light on the societal gap caused by ethnic tensions, religious conflicts, and socio-economic imbalances, which threaten to undermine Nigeria’s unity and stability.

The production promotes a space for reflection and engagement on issues of cultural identity, belonging, and nation-building. By promoting empathy and understanding, WAZOBIA empowers individuals to challenge stereotypes and embrace a shared vision of unity and progress.

In the spirit of WAZOBIA, let us join hands and hearts in the pursuit of a more united, resilient, and prosperous Nigeria, where every voice is heard and every culture cherished.
