Bold Creations

I am a self-taught photographer who for many years experimented with creative photography employing a variety of techniques and using my images to complement my creative writing. But this was put on hold when, in addition to my day job, my wife and I took on the lease of an old school, refurbished it, and created a Gallery for local artists.

Different Perspectives

The gallery became part of the village community and we ran it for 10 years. It was also a window for my interest in creative writing and I established “The Poetry Wall”, a space which was open for anyone to post their poetry on for the public to read. The creation of and running of the gallery, together with my own career progression and family commitments, meant I had little time for photography.

http://www.artiquitage.co.uk/In 2018 circumstances brought about a career change, giving me the opportunity to take up photography again this time with a digital camera. New Camera, new avenues, new art!
Although the camera and the software supplied with it enable me to continue to develop my creative skills, my art is firmly based on capturing the right images that can be used to convey a message.

In two years I had works for sale in galleries in Cumbria and had works exhibited in:

August to October 2018 – as one of the 5 photographers in the “Photographers of the North West” exhibition, a collaborative exhibition at Farfield Mill, Sedbergh, Cumbria.

February 2019 – works accepted in the Up Front Gallery, Unthank, Penrith, Cumbria, 2019 Open Exhibition

June to October 2019 – an exhibition at the Florence Arts Centre, Egremont, Cumbria. Including “Music at an Exhibition”, in collaboration with my son John Wiseman, an evening of music he composed which was inspired by works in the exhibition.

September to November 2019 – an exhibition at Mae’s Tea Room and Gallery, Uldale, Cumbria.
February 2020 – works accepted in the Up Front Gallery, Unthank, Penrith, Cumbria, 2020 Open Exhibition.

Things were going well …. until March 2020.

From then other things took priority and my photographic art work was relegated to the back seat. There were occasional times when it got to sit in the front seat, works accepted for the FLUX Virtual Exhibition Autumn 2021 and in the Collect Art Autumn 2022 Magazine, but most of the time it lolled about in the back while other things were responsible for the driving. Now things are getting back to normal, as normal as normal is today, I have added works to my portfolio, the steering wheel beckons and I’m ready to to take off the handbrake.

In September I was chosen as one of the three Art from Heart’s AUTUMN 2023 Artists of the Season.

Artist Statement

I think of myself as a photographic artist using the camera to gather images for artistic use, rather than a photographer using a camera to record what is in front of the lens. I look at the world with an eye for the material that can be manipulated and enhanced to create bold statement images to convey ideas in striking, pieces of thought-provoking artwork.

Many of my images relate to contemporary issues, from the global environment to personal experiences that many people have been through. My challenge is to use my imagination and eye for composition and colour to create artworks that make viewers think about the content to raise their awareness of, and make them consider specific issues from a different perspective.
